Your donation directly supports Washington Studio School, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to building a vibrant community of artists and art instruction for adults and high-school teens. WASHINGTON STUDIO SCHOOL (WSS) is a community of artists and students dedicated to the practice of visual arts with conscious awareness of both historical traditions and contemporary experience. Our exceptional faculty, all practicing artists, teach high school and adult students the art of observation. Working from life, students at all levels learn the skills and visual language necessary to translate their observation into a personal vision. History. The heritage of WSS is set in the early 1950s when a group of individuals met in the attic of the Phillips Collection for lively discussion and debate about the evolving direction of art. Led by Law Watkins Sr, the group began teaching studio classes in the “Studio House” located behind the museum. When the museum needed the Studio House space for the museum, the group was approached by American University to develop the AU art department. In the 1980s, a group of artists, former AU students and faculty, sensed a loss of valuable visual arts education in the DC area. In 1985, they founded WSS as a nonprofit institution to fill this gap. WSS celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Teaching Philosophy. Faculty at WSS are practicing artists with degrees in Fine Arts. They are dedicated to sharing their knowledge and experience and committed to furthering students' pursuit of study in the visual arts. Faculty challenge students, providing no easy formulas, but asking students to bring their greatest efforts to their endeavors. Instructors provide students with an arsenal of skills, while maintaining a sensitivity to each student's individual artistic inclination. Curriculum. WSS offers exceptional, high quality art instruction in an intimate environment. Students work from direct observation in the studio and outdoors, and study masterworks at Washington area museums. Classes are small (generally 8-12 students) and include demonstration, critique and art history to inform students on how artists have approached and resolved problems. First-time students are encouraged to enroll in beginning drawing classes to provide a strong foundation upon which to build an art practice, as well as to gain an introduction to the school, its faculty and philosophy. Community of Student Artists. The WSS approach to teaching has created an environment that allows intimacy in teaching with mentoring opportunities and shared learning among students. The Atelier is a unique adjunct to the Studio School. It offers shared studio space for 20 artists and an opportunity to work either alone or with other advanced artists. Atelier members may share models and still-life setups, critique each other's work and share ideas about all things related to art. Artists interested in becoming a member of the Atelier should call the school's administrative office or talk with an instructor. *****************************************************
